One of the must see stops for illustrative types visiting NYC is (of course) the Society of Illustrators, which is currently displaying it's annual awards show. The stop was made extra-sweet with the inclusion of several former/current Albertan's work. Sam Weber had several images in the show including the gold medal(!), Jillian Tamaki's lush work was also featured, as well as the retro-cool editorial work of Lincoln Agnew, and the fuzzy kid's book illustration of our own Renata Liwska. This lovely illustration (right) by Genevieve Simms was also awarded a spot in the show.
Much of the work displayed was digital, which I suspect mirrors what's happening in illustration now. Still, there was a good amount of hand drawn/painted originals. Seeing original artwork is a special thrill, which makes putting on the show next Thursday featuring original drawings and prints by Genevieve so exciting. To see the work on it's original surface and the mark making as the artist intended is a super thrill and I feel lucky to be able to present it!
